The bottle with the V.

Some Valdobbiadene bottles carry a long embossed V on the neck, and the word «Valdobbiadene» in italics on the base. It’s the bottle designed by the Confraternita di Valdobbiadene: only authorised wineries can use it, and only for Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG and Superiore di Cartizze. SERALBA comes in that bottle.

What it is.

A bottle designed for this denomination alone, by the Confraternita di Valdobbiadene, the association that has promoted the wine of these hills since 1946. You recognise it by touch before sight: the long embossed V on the neck, and on the base, in italics, Valdobbiadene. It does one thing: it says where the wine comes from, with no need to read the label.

Who can use it.

You can’t just buy it. The Confraternita grants the authorisation every year to local wineries that ask for it and that produce at least 51% Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, as the wineries that use it explain. Only Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG and Cartizze can go inside: not a Prosecco DOC, not another wine.

Why it matters.

On a shelf of Proseccos that all look alike, the V is a shortcut: hills, DOCG, a winery from here that chose to say so. Not every DOCG winery uses it, and it’s a choice: the bottle costs a bit more, and it means keeping two different glasses in the cellar. Those who use it care.

SERALBA and the V.

SERALBA is bottled in the V bottle by the Valdobbiadene winery we chose, which holds the authorisation. It felt right: the V says where the wine comes from, the label says the rest. When you pick it up, run your thumb over the neck.

The two bottles

Three quick questions.

Does the V mean it’s a Cartizze?

No. The bottle is reserved for Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG and Cartizze: the V says «hills of Valdobbiadene», not «Cartizze». Cartizze is written on the label.

Are bottles without the V worse?

No. Many DOCG wineries use a standard bottle and make an excellent wine. The V is a choice of those who want to say it with the glass too.

Can you see the V in the photo?

Yes: on the neck, above the label. In our bottle photos you can glimpse it; in real life you feel it under your fingers.
